Life with a Border Collie: The Good, The Chaotic, The Hilarious

Life with a Border Collie: The Good, The Chaotic, The Hilarious

So you’re thinking about getting a border collie, or want to know more about a day in the life, then you’ve come to the right place. Here’s a glimpse into my day-to-day…

🧠 The Good: Genius in a Fur Coat
There’s nothing like watching your Border Collie learn something new — and immediately look for a way to improve it.

They pick up cues faster than you can teach them, read your emotions like an empath with four legs, and make every training session feel like a TED Talk.

They’re thinkers. Workers. Observers. They don’t just play with toys — they solve them.

The bond you build isn’t just affectionate — it’s collaborative. You’re not just a pet parent… you’re a teammate.

🌪️ The Chaotic: No Off Switch, Just Vibes

Border Collies don’t really do chill — at least, not without earning it first.

If there’s no job to do, they’ll create one. Mine has taken it upon herself to:

  • Herd the other pets (and occasionally my feet)
  • Patrol the windows like it’s her 9-to-5
  • Alert me if I blink too slowly while watching TV

And if you think you’ve tired them out? Wait until 9:47pm when they explode into full-speed hallway zoomies, dragging every toy they own behind them like a parade.

They’re hyper-aware, always one step ahead, and often two steps into chaos — not out of bad behaviour, but because their brain is always on.

😂 The Hilarious: A Little Too Smart for Their Own Good

Border Collies are the comedians of the dog world — not because they try to be, but because they’re so intensely serious about ridiculous things.

Mine argues with her FluentPet buttons. She’s deeply offended if I forget to narrate what I’m doing. She sighs with the drama of a soap opera star if I give the cat attention first.

They’re overthinkers with flair. And you’ll find yourself laughing at things you never expected to be part of dog ownership.

💬 The Real Talk: This Life Isn’t for Everyone

A Border Collie is not a plug-and-play dog.

They need:

  • A job or structured outlet
  • Consistent training
  • Mental stimulation
  • An owner who gets that energy can’t be wished away

But they’ll also show you just how intelligent, intuitive, and in-tune a dog can be when you meet them halfway.

Daisy, my border collie, has not only been the best companion I could’ve asked for but she keeps me busy, presents and always on my toes. We learn together and she brings me so much joy. Border collies are a rollercoaster ride, but the view is pretty spectacular.

She’s the inspiration for Pet.Haus and I hope your companions get as much joy from the brand as my own.
